The Infinite Artist Spotlight is our weekly picks for the best gigs to check out. This week’s list is jam packed with international and local acts, across different genres of music including rock, folk, hip hop, metal, house and indie pop.

Leah Senior

Leah Senior is a Melbourne based folk singer who has been wooing audiences withher haunting melodies, played over stripped back folk guitar. With the release of her single The City is a Stream earlier this year, Leah Senior has been gaining recognition in Australian music circles. She is set to become an even bigger success with the recent release of her debut album, Summer’s On The Ground.

Sounds like… Haunting folk music sung with soul.

For fans of… Laura Marling, Gillian Welch, and Noah And The Whale.

Matoma

Norwegian based DJ and producer Matoma is only 24, but he is already a global sensation. Matoma has racked up millions of views on his Soundcloud thanks to his brilliant remixes, which include remaking popular songs from artists like Eminem and Maroon 5, as well as his Notorious B.I.G collaboration Old Thing Back. Describing his trademark sound as tropical house music, Matoma is the perfect soundtrack for welcoming summer.

Sounds like… House music drenched in summer a.k.a. Tropical house music.

For fans of… Kygo, Galantis, Lost Frequencies, The Chainsmokers.

PLTS

Byron Bay based band, PLTS (pronounced PILOTS) play feel-good indie rock music. Since forming in 2012, PLTS have been touring Australia and have honed their skills as a great live act. Along with their live shows, PLTS have recently been in the studio recording the follow up to their 2013 EP. Their latest single On & On was produced by JP Fung, who has previously worked with Last Dinosaurs, Josh Pyke, and Art Vs Science.

Sounds like… An indie rock venture into nostalgia and connection, that doubles as a bold sonic progression for a group exploring the boundaries of their sound.

For fans of… Phoenix Foundation, Smashing Pumpkins, Powderfinger.

Mathas

Perth native Mathas has earned a reputation as a unique MC that delivers honest rhymes, laid over solid beats. Dubbed by Triple J as “one of the best MCs out of Perth”, Mathas is a socially conscious rapper, tackling issues all too often ignored in Australian hip hop.

Sounds like… Politically charged Aussie hip hop, laid over solid beats.

For fans of… Seth Sentry, Drapht, Home Brew, Big Village Records.

Hein Cooper

From the small town of Milton in New South Wales, Hein Cooper is taking his talent to the world. With a haunting voice played over alt-folk stylings, Hein Cooper is certainly a name to watch out for. Having already toured Canada and France, as well as getting some airplay on BBC, it is safe to say that 2015 has been a huge year for Cooper. Luckily for Australian audiences, he is back in his homeland putting the finishing touches on his upcoming debut album.

Sounds like… Vocal heavy alt-folk, indie pop.

For fans of Gordi, Foreign Diplomats, The Franklin Electric, Tora, Bon Iver.

Ne Obliviscaris

Melbourne metal band Ne Obliviscaris have been showcasing their intense brand of progressive metal across the globe. With their live show being described as “absolutely phenomenal… one of the absolute best live performances I’ve seen in living memory” by metal blog No Clean Singing, it is safe to assume that Ne Obliviscaris are making a name for themselves. Their intense sound is produced through the use of multiple instruments, including a violin, which challenges listeners’ assumptions of what metal music is, and what it can be.

Sounds like Progressive, extreme, melodic metal.

For fans of… Angel Vivaldi, Black Crown Initiate, Persefone, Wintersun.

Mercury Rev

Veteran US psych rockers Mercury Rev have been playing their unique brand of rock music for over two decades. Mercury Rev weave brilliant psych rock guitar with soaring, psychedelic vocals, a sound that they have become known as pioneers of. Described as ‘dreamweavers’, the band certainly know how to put the audience into a dreamy state.

Sounds like… The strangest alternative rock dream you have ever had, but a brilliant dream nonetheless!

For fans of… The Flaming Lips, Sparkle Horse, Yo La Tengo, Beck.

See Mercury Rev live… Mercury Rev are returning to Australian shores for their first headline show since 2002. See them play live at the Oxford Art Factory this coming Monday 7th December. Passes will go live to Infinite members at 12 noon this Saturday.
